Health and Nutrition

no child is born to die!!

Improving child health and nutrition is central to the overall development of any nation. The health and nutritional status of children who constitute 39% of the population in India are very poor due to several reasons. Every year 32 children per 1000 die before completing their first birthday (SRS, 2018). With regards to the nutritional status of children under 5 years of age, 21% are wasted, 38.4% are stunted, 35.8% are underweight and 58.6% are anemic in India (NFHS 4, 2015-16). The issue of poor health and nutrition is intergenerational in nature where undernourished or unhealthy girls become undernourished or unhealthy mothers and give birth to a low birth weight baby or unhealthy baby, and the cycle continues. Therefore, it becomes imperative to break this cycle. In the line with this, Premanu Foundation targets the RMNCH+ (Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health) strategy to overcome the issue of poor health and poor nutrition among children. We do not look at this issue in isolation but we contextualize it from the structural and cultural realities situated at the intersection of caste, class, and patriarchy which expresses power relations in the socio-economic, political and cultural domains.

Following are the areas we work in -

SIGNIFICANCE

Care in early ages lay down the strong foundation of Physical & Mental development. From the conception to 2 years of age a child brain forms billions neurones, and if we focus on a child health, nutrition and early stimulation it will impact the development of a child very much. However, children’s rights are often violated during this early ages which impacts the multi-sectoral development of a child like slow learning,  poor health & nutrition status, frustration, depression, crime, unemployment, low IQ and so on.
Moreover, the data shows that 1 in every 3 child do not get the full developmental potential. Also, the the neonate deaths in India are 28 and 1 in every 3 children is malnourished. Health, Nutrition & early Stimulation play a significant role to overcome these issues.
